Asphalt
It is often assumed that asphalt and tarmacadam are the same thing, however there are a few differences:

Tarmac® contains larger aggregates than asphalt, so it is not quite as smooth.

Asphalt is more expensive when used for a small area, however it is economical when it is used over a large area.
